Reading this

Effects are one-line summaries written for this reference, not the book's text. They cover the main mechanical effect and omit exceptions, limits and edge cases — read the full entry at the page shown before you rely on one. Requirements are exact. A few Edges may be taken more than once — Connections, Trademark Weapon, Scholar, New Powers, Power Points and Arcane Background. Everything else is once only unless its entry says otherwise.

Spending the points

Effects here are brief summaries; the full entries carry the detail. Up to 4 points of benefit. Major is worth 2, Minor 1. 2 points buys an Edge or one attribute step; 1 point buys an extra skill point or doubles starting funds. Full entries from p22 — and where the summary table on p56 disagrees with the full entry, the full entry wins.

Cost

1 point per step at or below the linked attribute, 2 per step above it. Athletics, Common Knowledge, Notice, Persuasion and Stealth start free at d4; everything else starts at nothing, and untrained rolls are d4−2.

Using them

Roll the arcane skill against a TN of 4 and spend the cost whether or not it works. A Critical Failure is Backlash — Shaken, and a Benny won't clear that instance. Points return at 5 per hour of rest, or 5 for a Benny. Many powers are opposed rather than TN 4, which punishes a low die hard. Trappings — how it looks — are yours and change nothing mechanically.p150–151

Two things that bite

Min Str: below it, ranged attacks take −1 per die step short, and melee damage dice are capped at your Strength. Encumbrance: your limit in pounds is 20 × your Strength die step (d4 = 20 lb, d6 = 40, d8 = 60, d10 = 80, d12 = 100). Over it is −2 to Pace, Agility and Agility-linked skills.p67

Prices are period-relative — a "cost" is what the item is worth in the setting's own economy, not a fixed dollar figure. Confirm the baseline with your GM.p69
